Conditions
The the General Insurance Conditions (GIC's) of an insurance contract are decisive to anyone taking out an insurance. The GIC's are important and must be respected by all parties involved.
Start date of the contract
The insurance validity must begin the month you arrive in Switzerland, not three months later. You just have three months of time to find an insurance, but the validity start must still be the month of arrival. If you are changing your insurance company, please note that according to the Swiss law it is forbidden to have an insurance gap between the two insurances. These rules are defined by the Swiss social health law in the KVG LAMal. The start date is always the first day of the month. You cannot start the insurance for example on the 14.01.2010. The system will automatically insure you from the 01.01.2010 on.
Duration of the contract
If your stay in Switzerland is not limited, the contract is always for a full calendar year. Do not confuse the duration of contract with the payment rate. The calendar year is from 01.01. to 31.12. For example if your contract begins on the 01.12.2009 you are bound until the 31.12.2010 because the cancellation delay is three months before the end of the calendar year (30.09.2010 in this case).
Payment rate
The payment rate offers you the possibility to not pay an entire year at once, but to make at the minimum a regular payment every three months.
Annual anniversary of the contract - renewal is 01.01
As mentioned above, the annual anniversary of your contract is 01.01, this is also the official renewal date.
Cancellation delay.
You can cancel your contract once per calendar year with a delay of 3 months. For example, if you want switch to another company you have to send us a cancellation letter with a post stamp date of the latest 30.09.2009.
Special cancellation
- Leaving Switzerland : we need a letter from the migration office of your city or community that you leave definitively (attestation of departure) and a cancellation letter.
- Changing status : If you are no more student or researcher. Send us proof (termination of your university or researcher contract) and a cancellation letter
- Cannot be eligible : you are in Switzerland for over six years. Send us a copy of the letter from the cantonal health authorities and a cancellation letter.
If for the point 2-3 you continue to live in Switzerland, send us a copy of your new insurance company certificate.
